I started playing basketball in 2nd grade, and I can’t imagine my life without it. I’m a junior and have been on the varsity basketball team at South Lyon East High School both freshman and sophomore year. I’ve started every game (excluding senior night) both years. This past season we were runner up in our conference and our district, losing to the 12th ranked team in the state.
Basketball is my favorite sport, but in track I hold my school’s record in the 400 m dash (the time was 61.33 sec) and earned all-conference. I take pride in my speed and relentless defense; my coach typically matches me up with the opposing team’s best offensive player.
I love the hustle part of the game. I love the feeling of sprinting back when the other team thinks they have a wide open full court layup and swatting the ball from them. I love the look of frustration on a girl’s face after I’ve stolen the ball or tipped her pass several times. I’m a team player 100% of the time and I take pride in the numbers that don’t show up on stat sheets; such as the difference in the speed of the game, how many points my matchup has scored (shutting down the girl I'm defending), how quick I get the ball up the floor, how I’m able to minimize my turnovers (I only averaged 1.2 turnovers per game even though I’m one of the main ball handlers), and my ability break a press and shake a defender. I averaged 28 minutes per game this season.
I love staying after practice with a teammate to get extra shots up and on game day I’m always the first girl laced up and ready to warm up. When I’m on the court I’m in my element and I can’t wait to see what the future holds for my basketball career.
